Toxic Houseplants & Garden Plants

Warning

Many common plants can be toxic to pets. The severity ranges from mild irritation to potentially fatal.

Highly Toxic Plants (Examples):

  • Lilies (Lilium and Hemerocallis species): Extremely toxic to cats, causing kidney failure.
  • Sago Palm: Causes liver failure, seizures, death.
  • Autumn Crocus: Affects multiple organ systems.
  • Oleander, Yew, Foxglove: Affect heart function.
  • Castor Bean: Contains ricin, highly toxic.

Moderately Toxic Plants (Examples):

  • Philodendron/Pothos/Monstera: Oral irritation, swelling.
  • Aloe Vera: Vomiting, diarrhoea.
  • Ivy, Daffodil, Peace Lily, Snake Plant, Jade Plant, Amaryllis, Tulips/Hyacinths: Various gastrointestinal and oral irritation symptoms.

Signs of Plant Poisoning:

Drooling, pawing at mouth, vomiting, diarrhoea, difficulty swallowing, lethargy, changes in urination, tremors, seizures, irregular heartbeat.

Emergency First Aid:

  1. Remove plant material from the mouth if safe.
  2. Identify the plant (take photos or samples).
  3. Contact your veterinarian or Animal Poison Control.
  4. Do NOT induce vomiting unless directed by a professional.
CRITICAL - SEEK VET CARE

Any exposure to true lilies (Easter, Asiatic, etc.) is a life-threatening emergency for cats. Even minor contact with pollen or vase water can cause rapid kidney failure. Seek immediate veterinary care.
