Sprains & Strains

Warning

Sprains involve damage to ligaments (which connect bones to bones), while strains affect muscles or tendons (which connect muscles to bones). These soft tissue injuries commonly occur during play, exercise, or accidents. Although less severe than fractures, they can cause significant pain and require proper treatment.

Symptoms:

  • Limping or lameness
  • Reluctance to put weight on a limb
  • Swelling around joints or muscles
  • Pain when the affected area is touched
  • Reduced activity level
  • Joint laxity (looseness) in case of sprains
  • Muscle tenderness in case of strains

Action Steps:

  1. Rest - restrict activity to allow healing.
  2. Apply ice wrapped in a towel for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times daily for the first 48 hours.
  3. Contact your veterinarian for proper diagnosis and pain management.
  4. Follow veterinary recommendations for recovery and rehabilitation.
Important Warning

What may appear as a minor sprain could be a more serious injury such as a fracture or torn ligament. If lameness persists for more than 24 hours or is severe, veterinary examination is necessary for proper diagnosis and treatment.
