Spinal Injuries

Critical

Spinal injuries can result from trauma (falls, accidents), rough play, or existing conditions like IVDD. They can range from mild inflammation to severe damage causing partial or complete paralysis.

Signs of Spinal Injury:

  • Inability to walk or stand
  • Dragging legs (especially hind legs)
  • Pain when touched along the spine
  • Rigid stance or arched back
  • Crying out when moved or picked up
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Weakness in limbs
  • Uncoordinated movement
  • Paralysis (partial or complete)

Common Causes:

  • Car accidents
  • Falls from height
  • Being stepped on
  • Attacks by larger animals
  • Rough play or exercise
  • Underlying conditions (IVDD, tumours)

Emergency First Aid:

  1. Immobilise your pet:
    • Use a rigid, flat surface as a stretcher (board, tray, sturdy box).
    • Gently slide a blanket, towel, or jacket under your pet.
    • Lift using the blanket to keep the spine straight.
    • Secure your pet to the stretcher if possible to prevent movement (e.g., with towels or straps, carefully).
  2. Minimise movement:
    • Keep head, neck, and back aligned.
    • Avoid twisting or bending the spine.
    • Move as a unit, keeping the body straight.
  3. Transport to emergency veterinary care immediately.
CRITICAL - SEEK VET CARE

Never force movement if your pet is unable to move their limbs. Improper handling can worsen spinal injuries. If you suspect a spinal injury, consider it an emergency requiring immediate veterinary care. The faster treatment is provided, the better the chance for recovery.
