Silica Gel & Desiccants

Info

Silica gel packets and other desiccants are common in packaging. Most are low toxicity, but can cause issues.

Potential Hazards:

  • Obstruction: The main risk is gastrointestinal blockage, especially from the packet itself.
  • Mild GI Upset: Vomiting or diarrhoea.
  • Iron Toxicity: Oxygen absorbers (iron powder packets in food packaging) can be dangerous if large amounts are ingested.

Signs to Watch For:

Choking, vomiting, decreased appetite, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea. Signs of obstruction: persistent vomiting, inability to keep food/water down.

First Aid:

  1. If choking, perform Heimlich and seek immediate vet care.
  2. For ingestion, contact your vet, especially if oxygen absorbers or multiple packets were eaten.
  3. Monitor for signs of obstruction for 24-48 hours.
Important Warning

While plain silica gel is low toxicity, the packet can cause choking or blockage. Oxygen absorbers (iron) pose a higher chemical risk. When in doubt, contact your veterinarian.
