Severe Allergic Reactions (Anaphylaxis)
Critical
Anaphylaxis is a severe, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that can occur within minutes of exposure to an allergen. Common triggers include insect stings, medications, and certain foods. This is a medical emergency requiring immediate veterinary care.
Symptoms:
- Sudden onset of intense itching
- Facial swelling, especially around the eyes, lips, ears, or throat
- Hives or welts on the skin
- Difficulty breathing or wheezing
- Vomiting and diarrhoea
- Weakness and collapse
- Pale or blue-tinged gums
- Rapid heart rate
Action Steps:
- This is a medical emergency - seek veterinary care immediately.
- Keep your pet as calm and still as possible.
- If known, note the potential allergen your pet was exposed to.
- If your pet has a prescribed epinephrine injector (e.g., EpiPen), use as directed by your vet.
CRITICAL - SEEK VET CARE
Anaphylaxis can progress rapidly and may be fatal without prompt treatment. Never delay seeking emergency care if you suspect your pet is having a severe allergic reaction.
