Recreational Drugs & Alcohol
Critical
Recreational drugs, alcohol, and tobacco products can have severe or fatal effects on pets.
High-Risk Substances & Signs:
- Cannabis/Marijuana: Lethargy, wobbling, dilated pupils, slow heart rate, urinary incontinence. Edibles are especially dangerous due to other toxic ingredients.
- Alcohol: Disorientation, vomiting, low body temperature, depressed breathing, seizures.
- Nicotine (Tobacco, Vape Juice): Vomiting, elevated heart rate, tremors, weakness, seizures, respiratory failure.
- Stimulants (Cocaine, etc.): Extreme agitation, hyperthermia, seizures.
- Opioids: Extreme lethargy, slow shallow breathing, pinpoint pupils.
Emergency First Aid:
- Be honest with your veterinarian about what was ingested. This is crucial for treatment.
- Contact your vet or emergency clinic immediately.
- Do NOT induce vomiting unless directed by a vet.
- Bring the substance or packaging if possible.
CRITICAL - SEEK VET CARE
Even small amounts can be life-threatening. Do not "wait and see". Vets are focused on treating your pet, not judging you. Prompt, accurate information is essential for survival.
