Recreational Drugs & Alcohol

Critical

Recreational drugs, alcohol, and tobacco products can have severe or fatal effects on pets.

High-Risk Substances & Signs:

  • Cannabis/Marijuana: Lethargy, wobbling, dilated pupils, slow heart rate, urinary incontinence. Edibles are especially dangerous due to other toxic ingredients.
  • Alcohol: Disorientation, vomiting, low body temperature, depressed breathing, seizures.
  • Nicotine (Tobacco, Vape Juice): Vomiting, elevated heart rate, tremors, weakness, seizures, respiratory failure.
  • Stimulants (Cocaine, etc.): Extreme agitation, hyperthermia, seizures.
  • Opioids: Extreme lethargy, slow shallow breathing, pinpoint pupils.

Emergency First Aid:

  1. Be honest with your veterinarian about what was ingested. This is crucial for treatment.
  2. Contact your vet or emergency clinic immediately.
  3. Do NOT induce vomiting unless directed by a vet.
  4. Bring the substance or packaging if possible.
CRITICAL - SEEK VET CARE

Even small amounts can be life-threatening. Do not "wait and see". Vets are focused on treating your pet, not judging you. Prompt, accurate information is essential for survival.
