Pancreatitis

Critical

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas that can range from mild to life-threatening. It's often triggered by high-fat meals, certain medications, obesity, or may occur without an obvious cause. Some breeds, such as miniature schnauzers, are predisposed to this condition.

Symptoms:

  • Repeated vomiting
  • Abdominal pain - may adopt a "prayer position" with chest down and rear end up
  • Hunched back or guarding the abdomen
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lethargy
  • Diarrhoea (may contain blood)
  • Fever
  • Dehydration

Action Steps:

  1. Contact your veterinarian promptly.
  2. Withhold food and water until you receive veterinary advice.
  3. Note any recent dietary changes or consumption of fatty foods.
  4. Do not give any medications without veterinary guidance.
Important Warning

Pancreatitis can range from mild to fatal. Severe cases require hospitalisation. Even after recovery, some pets will need special diets and may experience recurrent episodes.
