Paints, Solvents & Adhesives
Warning
Home improvement products contain chemicals that are harmful through ingestion, skin contact, or inhalation.
Potentially Harmful Products:
- Oil-based paints & thinners: Toxic solvents.
- Super glue: Can adhere to tissues.
- Expanding glues (e.g., Gorilla Glue): Extremely dangerous, expands in stomach causing obstruction.
- Wood stains, varnishes, white spirit: Irritating and potentially toxic.
Signs of Exposure:
- Ingestion: Vomiting, drooling, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, lack of coordination.
- Inhalation: Coughing, difficulty breathing, disorientation.
- Skin Contact: Redness, irritation, chemical burns.
- Expanding Glue Ingestion: Vomiting, bloated abdomen, pain (surgical emergency).
Emergency First Aid:
- Inhalation: Move pet to fresh air.
- Skin Exposure: For wet products, wash with mild soap and water. For dried paint, trim fur (do not use solvents). For super glue, soak in warm, soapy water and consult a vet.
- Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting (especially for solvents or expanding glues).
- Contact your veterinarian or Animal Poison Control with product info.
CRITICAL - SEEK VET CARE
Never use solvents like acetone on your pet. Keep pets away from renovation areas. Ingestion of expanding glues is a surgical emergency.
