Onions & Garlic
Warning
All members of the Allium family (onions, garlic, leeks, chives, shallots) contain compounds that can damage red blood cells in dogs and cats, potentially causing haemolytic anaemia. Cats are especially sensitive. These foods are toxic in all forms: raw, cooked, powdered, or dehydrated.
Symptoms:
- Lethargy and weakness
- Pale gums
- Reduced appetite
- Dark or reddish urine
- Elevated heart and respiratory rates
- Vomiting and diarrhoea
- Collapse in severe cases
Action Steps:
- Contact your veterinarian if your pet has consumed these foods.
- Symptoms may take several days to appear.
- Keep food packaging if available.
- Note approximate amount consumed.
Important Warning
Many prepared foods (baby food, soup, sauces) contain onion or garlic powder. Be cautious with table scraps and check ingredient lists of any human food given to pets.
