Mothballs & Pest Repellents
Warning
Mothballs and other repellents contain toxic chemicals that can cause serious health problems.
Dangerous Products:
- Mothballs (Naphthalene or Paradichlorobenzene): Highly toxic to liver and nervous system, can cause anaemia. Naphthalene is more toxic.
- Camphor products: Toxic if ingested.
- Cedar and pine oil repellents: Can be toxic, especially to cats.
Signs of Mothball Poisoning:
Vomiting, mothball odour on breath, lethargy. Later signs: Pale/brown gums, difficulty breathing, tremors, seizures, liver damage.
Emergency First Aid:
- Remove pet from the area.
- Identify the type of mothball if possible.
- Contact your veterinarian immediately.
- Do NOT induce vomiting unless directed by a vet.
- If residue is on fur, wash with mild soap and water (wear gloves).
CRITICAL - SEEK VET CARE
A single mothball can be lethal to a small pet. Both types are dangerous. Use pet-safe alternatives for pest control.
