Minor Bleeding & Superficial Wounds
Warning
Minor wounds include small cuts, scrapes, scratches, and minor punctures. These injuries may bleed but typically stop within a few minutes. They affect only the surface layers of skin and don't penetrate to deeper tissues.
Signs of Minor Wounds:
- Slight bleeding that stops quickly
- Small cuts or abrasions
- Minimal pain or discomfort
- No significant swelling
- Pet remains active and alert
Action Steps:
- Gently clean the wound with lukewarm water or saline solution.
- Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth if there is bleeding.
- For small wounds, trim hair around the area (carefully).
- Apply a pet-safe antiseptic (avoid hydrogen peroxide on open wounds unless directed by a vet).
- Prevent your pet from licking the wound (use an E-collar if necessary).
- Monitor for signs of infection for several days.
Important Warning
Even minor wounds can become infected. Watch for increasing redness, swelling, discharge, or if your pet seems unusually focused on the wound area. Contact your vet if the wound doesn't begin healing within 24-48 hours.
