Meningitis

Critical

Meningitis is inflammation of the meninges, the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by infections, immune-mediated conditions, or other factors and requires prompt treatment.

Signs:

  • Severe neck pain and stiffness
  • Reluctance to move the head or neck
  • Fever
  • Sensitivity to touch, especially along the spine
  • Hunched posture
  • Muscle spasms or rigidity
  • Behavioural changes (aggression, depression)
  • Lethargy
  • Reduced appetite
  • In severe cases: seizures, disorientation, coma

Types:

  • Infectious: Bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic
  • Steroid-responsive meningitis-arteritis (SRMA): Immune-mediated, common in young dogs
  • Granulomatous meningoencephalitis (GME): Inflammatory condition of unknown cause

Breeds Predisposed to SRMA:

  • Beagles
  • Bernese Mountain Dogs
  • Boxers
  • German Shepherds
  • Weimaraners
  • Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers

Emergency First Aid:

  1. Keep your pet quiet and comfortable.
  2. Minimise handling, especially of the neck and spine.
  3. Do not administer any medications without veterinary guidance.
  4. Transport to an emergency veterinarian as soon as possible.
CRITICAL - SEEK VET CARE

Meningitis can progress rapidly and become life-threatening. Early diagnosis and treatment significantly improve prognosis. If your pet shows signs of neck pain with fever and behavioural changes, seek immediate veterinary care.
