Mange (Mites)

Warning

Mange is a skin condition caused by several species of microscopic mites. The two most common types are demodectic mange (caused by Demodex mites) and sarcoptic mange (caused by Sarcoptes scabiei, also known as scabies). Sarcoptic mange is highly contagious to other animals and humans.

Demodectic Mange Symptoms:

  • Hair loss, usually starting on the face, around the eyes, or on the legs
  • Mild to moderate redness
  • Scaling or crusty skin
  • Usually not intensely itchy
  • More common in young dogs or those with compromised immune systems

Sarcoptic Mange Symptoms:

  • Intense itching and scratching
  • Rash with small red bumps
  • Hair loss, often extensive
  • Crusty, scaly patches on skin
  • Skin thickening and wrinkling with chronicity
  • Often affects ear edges, elbows, and belly

Action Steps:

  1. Isolate affected pets if sarcoptic mange is suspected (it's highly contagious).
  2. Contact your veterinarian for proper diagnosis (requires skin scraping).
  3. Follow prescribed treatment, which may include oral medications, injections, or medicated baths.
  4. Treat all in-contact animals as directed by your veterinarian.
  5. Wash all bedding, collars, and harnesses.
Important Warning

If sarcoptic mange is diagnosed, humans in contact with the pet may develop a rash. While the mites cannot complete their life cycle on humans, they can cause temporary discomfort. Consult your physician if you develop any skin irritation.
