Macadamia Nuts

Warning

Macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs and can cause a temporary inability to walk properly, among other symptoms. The exact mechanism of toxicity is unknown, but even small amounts can cause signs in dogs. Cats do not appear to be affected.

Symptoms:

  • Weakness, especially in the hind legs
  • Inability to stand or walk normally
  • Pain or stiffness when moving
  • Tremors
  • Elevated body temperature (hyperthermia)
  • Vomiting
  • Lethargy

Action Steps:

  1. Contact your veterinarian if your dog has consumed macadamia nuts.
  2. Note approximately how many nuts were consumed.
  3. Check if the nuts were combined with chocolate, which adds additional toxicity.
Important Warning

Macadamia nuts can be found in biscuits, candy, and trail mixes. Symptoms typically appear within 12 hours of ingestion and may last for 12-48 hours.
