Lungworm & Slug/Snail Awareness
Warning
Lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) is a potentially fatal parasite spread by slugs and snails. Dogs get infected by eating slugs/snails, or even by licking slime trails on simple toys or bowls left outside.
Signs of Infection:
Signs can be vague and varied, including:
- Coughing or breathing difficulties
- Poor blood clotting (excessive bleeding from minor cuts, nose bleeds, anaemia)
- Weight loss
- Seizures (in severe cases)
Action Steps:
- Prevention: Use a monthly dewormer prescribed by your vet specifically for Lungworm (not all wormers kill it).
- Bring food bowls and toys inside at night.
- Stop your dog from eating slugs and snails.
- Seek veterinary care if you notice unexplained coughing or bleeding.
Important Warning
Lungworm is now endemic across much of the UK. Regular prevention is the only safe way to protect your dog, as treatment after infection can be difficult.
