Lick Granuloma (Acral Lick Dermatitis)

Warning

A lick granuloma is a thickened, raised area of skin caused by excessive licking or chewing, typically on a limb. It can begin from an injury, allergy, or boredom/anxiety, but becomes self-perpetuating as licking damages the skin, causing more irritation and compulsive licking behaviour.

Symptoms:

  • Raised, firm, reddened area of skin, typically on the front of the lower leg
  • Hair loss around the affected area
  • Persistent licking or chewing at one spot
  • Thickened, discoloured skin
  • Potential ulceration or oozing of the lesion
  • May be painful or itchy to the touch

Action Steps:

  1. Consult your veterinarian for proper diagnosis and to rule out other conditions.
  2. Follow multimodal treatment plan, which may include:
    • Elizabethan collar or protective covering
    • Topical or oral medications
    • Behavioural modification and environmental enrichment
    • Addressing underlying causes (allergies, anxiety, etc.)
  3. Be patient, as treatment often takes weeks to months.
  4. Provide mental stimulation and exercise to reduce stress and boredom.
Important Warning

Lick granulomas can be challenging to treat completely and may recur. They often have both physical and behavioural components. A comprehensive approach addressing both aspects typically yields the best results.
