Heavy Metal Poisoning

Warning

Heavy metals like lead, zinc, mercury, and arsenic can cause serious poisoning.

Common Sources:

  • Lead: Old paint, plumbing, fishing weights, some toys.
  • Zinc: Some coins, hardware (nuts, bolts), zinc oxide creams.
  • Mercury: Old thermometers, some batteries.
  • Arsenic: Older pesticides, treated wood.

Signs of Poisoning:

  • Lead: Vomiting/diarrhoea, abdominal pain, behaviour changes, seizures, blindness.
  • Zinc: Vomiting, lethargy, pale gums (anaemia), red/dark urine, organ damage.
  • Mercury: Vomiting, kidney damage, tremors, blindness, seizures.

Emergency First Aid:

  1. If you suspect ingestion, contact your vet immediately.
  2. Do NOT induce vomiting unless directed.
  3. Bring a sample of the item if possible.
CRITICAL - SEEK VET CARE

Heavy metal poisoning can cause permanent organ damage or death. X-rays are often needed to confirm ingestion. Ingestion of zinc-containing items can cause life-threatening anaemia.
