Grapes & Raisins

Critical

Grapes, raisins, and currants can cause acute kidney failure in dogs and possibly cats. The toxic substance is unknown, and sensitivity varies between animals - some pets may eat small amounts without issues while others suffer severe reactions from minimal quantities.

Symptoms:

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea (often within hours)
  • Decreased appetite
  • Lethargy, weakness
  • Abdominal pain
  • Decreased urination or no urination
  • Dehydration

Action Steps:

  1. Contact your veterinarian immediately.
  2. Do not wait for symptoms to appear.
  3. If ingestion was recent (<2 hours), your vet may induce vomiting.
  4. Bring any packaging or remains of what was consumed.
Important Warning

There is no safe amount of grapes or raisins for pets. Even small amounts can be toxic. This includes products containing them such as biscuits, bread, and trail mix.
