Fractures
Critical
Fractures are breaks in bones that can range from hairline cracks to complete breaks where the bone is separated into multiple pieces. They're typically caused by trauma such as falls, being hit by a car, or other accidents. Fractures require immediate veterinary attention to prevent further damage and ensure proper healing.
Symptoms:
- Limping or inability to bear weight on a limb
- Visible deformity or abnormal angle of a limb
- Swelling around the injured area
- Pain and vocalisation when touched
- Reluctance to move or play
- Exposed bone (in compound fractures)
- Bruising or discolouration
Action Steps:
- Minimise movement of your pet to prevent further injury.
- Do not attempt to realign the bone.
- For open fractures, cover the wound with a clean cloth or gauze.
- Do not apply ointments or medications to exposed bones.
- Transport carefully to a veterinarian immediately.
Important Warning
Never attempt to splint a fracture unless directed by a veterinarian. Improper splinting can cause additional damage. Transport your pet with minimal manipulation of the injured area.
