Foreign Object in Eye

Warning

Foreign objects like dirt, grass seeds, or splinters can become lodged in your pet's eye, causing pain, inflammation, and potential damage if not addressed quickly.

Signs:

  • Excessive blinking or squinting
  • Pawing at the eye
  • Visible foreign material
  • Redness and swelling
  • Discharge (clear or cloudy)
  • Keeping eye partially or fully closed
  • Avoiding bright light

First Aid Steps:

  1. Restrain your pet gently but securely.
  2. Examine the eye in good lighting, being careful not to apply pressure.
  3. If the object is visible on the surface:
    • Flush with sterile eye wash solution or clean lukewarm water.
    • Direct the stream from the inner corner outward.
    • Flush for 1-2 minutes if your pet will tolerate it.
  4. Do NOT:
    • Use cotton swabs or tweezers to remove objects.
    • Touch the eye directly with your fingers.
    • Apply pressure to the eyeball.
    • Use human eye drops without veterinary guidance.
Important Warning

If the object doesn't flush out easily, if it appears embedded, or if your pet is in significant distress, seek veterinary care immediately. Never attempt to remove embedded objects yourself.
