Flea Infestations
Warning
Fleas are common external parasites that cause intense itching and can lead to skin infections and other health issues, such as tapeworms and anaemia, especially in young or small pets.
Signs of Fleas:
- Intense scratching, biting, or licking
- "Flea dirt" (small black specks that turn red when wet) in the fur, especially at the base of the tail
- Visible live fleas (small, fast-moving brown insects)
- Hair loss and scabs (often associated with Flea Allergy Dermatitis)
- Pale gums in severe infestations (anaemia)
Action Steps:
- Treat all pets in the household with a veterinarian-recommended flea product.
- Thoroughly vacuum all carpets, furniture, and crevices, and dispose of the vacuum bag outside.
- Wash all pet bedding, blankets, and toys in hot water.
- Consider treating your home with a pet-safe insecticide if the infestation is severe.
- Consult your veterinarian for the most effective and safe treatment plan for your pets and home.
CRITICAL - SEEK VET CARE
Never use flea products intended for dogs on cats, as some ingredients (like permethrin) can be fatal to felines. A large flea burden on a small puppy or kitten can cause life-threatening anaemia.
