Fatty Foods & Pancreatitis
Warning
High-fat foods can trigger pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) in pets, particularly dogs. This painful condition can range from mild to life-threatening. Common culprits include fatty meat scraps, bacon, sausage, gravy, and oily foods.
High-Risk Foods:
- Bacon, sausage, and fatty meat trimmings
- Fried foods
- Greasy fast food
- Gravy and meat drippings
- Butter and oils
- Rich dairy products (cream, cheese)
Symptoms of Pancreatitis:
- Repeated vomiting
- Intense abdominal pain
- Hunched posture
- Fever
- Lethargy
- Diarrhoea
- Decreased appetite
- Dehydration
Action Steps:
- Contact your veterinarian if you notice multiple symptoms, especially after fatty food consumption.
- Do not give food or water until you've spoken with your vet.
- Be prepared to describe what and how much your pet ate.
Important Warning
Some pets, particularly miniature schnauzers and certain other breeds, are predisposed to pancreatitis. Holiday meals are a common time for pancreatitis emergencies due to pets being fed table scraps and rich foods.
