Eye Discharge
Info
Eye discharge can range from normal tear production to signs of infection or inflammation. The colour, consistency, and amount of discharge provide important clues about underlying causes.
Types of Discharge:
- Clear, watery discharge: May indicate allergies, irritation, or blocked tear ducts
- White/grey mucus: Often seen with dry eye or irritation
- Yellow/green discharge: Suggests bacterial infection
- Bloody discharge: May indicate trauma, high blood pressure, or serious conditions
- Rusty/brown tear stains: Common in certain breeds, can be normal or indicate chronic irritation
When to Be Concerned:
- Sudden increase in amount or change in type of discharge
- Discharge accompanied by redness, swelling, or squinting
- Yellow or green coloured discharge
- Discharge with a foul odour
- Discharge from only one eye (especially if sudden)
- Any discharge accompanied by changes in behaviour or discomfort
First Aid and Home Care:
- Gently clean the area with a clean, warm, damp cloth.
- Wipe from the inner corner outward (avoid wiping across both eyes with the same part of the cloth).
- For mild clear discharge, keep the area clean and monitor.
- For coloured discharge or if accompanied by other symptoms, seek veterinary care.
Important Warning
Some breeds (particularly small, flat-faced breeds) naturally have more eye discharge and tear staining. However, sudden changes in discharge amount or type should be evaluated. Never use human eye drops without veterinary guidance.
