Dislocations

Critical

A dislocation occurs when bones in a joint are forced out of their normal positions. This painful condition most commonly affects hip, elbow, and shoulder joints in pets. Dislocations require immediate veterinary care to prevent long-term damage to the joint and surrounding tissues.

Symptoms:

  • Sudden lameness or inability to use a limb
  • Visible deformity of the joint
  • Swelling around the affected joint
  • Pain when the area is touched or moved
  • Reluctance to move
  • Abnormal positioning of the limb
  • Muscle spasms near the joint

Action Steps:

  1. Restrict movement to prevent further injury.
  2. Do not attempt to push the joint back in place.
  3. Apply a cold pack wrapped in a towel for 10 minutes to reduce swelling.
  4. Carefully transport your pet to a veterinarian immediately.
Important Warning

Never force movement of a dislocated joint. Some dislocations, particularly of the hip in certain breeds, can recur after being corrected. Your veterinarian may recommend surgical repair for recurring dislocations.
