Cooked Bones

Warning

Cooked bones, especially from poultry (chicken, turkey) can splinter and cause serious injuries to pets. They may cause choking, blockages, or perforations in the digestive tract. Bone fragments can also cause damage to the mouth, throat, and internal organs.

Potential Complications:

  • Choking
  • Broken teeth
  • Mouth or tongue injuries
  • Bone fragments lodged in oesophagus
  • Obstruction in stomach or intestines
  • Perforation of digestive tract
  • Constipation from bone fragments
  • Peritonitis (if perforation occurs)

Warning Signs:

  • Choking, gagging, or retching
  • Vomiting
  • Drooling excessively
  • Restlessness or discomfort
  • Swollen abdomen
  • Constipation or difficulty defecating
  • Lack of appetite
  • Lethargy

Action Steps:

  1. If your pet is choking, perform the pet Heimlich manoeuvre (see Choking section).
  2. If your pet has swallowed bone fragments, contact your veterinarian.
  3. Do not induce vomiting, as bone fragments may cause additional damage.
  4. Watch for signs of discomfort or digestive issues for 72 hours.
Important Warning

Never give your pet cooked bones of any kind. If you wish to give your dog bones, consult with your veterinarian about appropriate safe alternatives (e.g., specific raw bones or dental chews).
