Constipation

Warning

Constipation occurs when pets have difficulty passing stool or go longer than normal without defecating. It can be caused by dehydration, lack of fibre, ingested hair, bone fragments, foreign materials, enlarged prostate (in male dogs), or more serious conditions like megacolon or neurological disorders.

Symptoms:

  • Straining to defecate with little or no production
  • Small, hard, dry stools (sometimes with blood)
  • Infrequent or absence of bowel movements
  • Crying or showing discomfort when attempting to defecate
  • Lethargy
  • Decreased appetite
  • Vomiting (in severe cases)
  • Abdominal discomfort or swelling

Action Steps:

  1. Contact your veterinarian if constipation persists more than 48 hours.
  2. Ensure your pet has plenty of fresh water.
  3. Do not give human laxatives without veterinary guidance.
  4. Be aware that straining with no stool could also indicate urinary blockage (a true emergency).
Important Warning

What appears to be constipation may sometimes be an obstruction or urinary blockage. If your pet is straining with no results, or showing signs of discomfort, seek veterinary attention to rule out more serious conditions.
