Conkers, Acorns & Mast

Warning

Common in the UK autumn, Horse Chestnuts (Conkers) and Acorns contain toxins (aesculin and tannins respectively) and pose a serious blockage risk.

Risks:

  • Obstruction: The large, hard seeds can easily block the intestine, requiring surgery.
  • Toxicity: Vomiting, diarrhoea (can be bloody), abdominal pain, lethargy.

Action Steps:

  1. Prevent dogs from playing with or eating conkers and acorns.
  2. If eaten, contact your veterinarian.
  3. Watch for signs of blockage (vomiting, unable to keep water down).
Important Warning

Puppies are especially at risk of obstruction. "Mast" (accumulated berries/nuts on the forest floor) can also get mouldy, adding a risk of mycotoxin tremors.
