Caffeine is a stimulant found in coffee, tea, energy drinks, sodas, chocolate, and some medications. It affects the central nervous system and heart, potentially causing serious complications in pets.

Common Sources:

  • Coffee beans, grounds, and brewed coffee
  • Tea bags and brewed tea
  • Energy drinks and sodas
  • Chocolate (which also contains theobromine)
  • Some pain relievers and cold medications
  • Diet pills and pre-workout supplements

Symptoms:

  • Restlessness and hyperactivity
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Panting, rapid breathing
  • Vomiting and diarrhoea
  • Elevated body temperature
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • Abnormal heart rhythm
  • Collapse

Action Steps:

  1. Contact your veterinarian or animal poison control immediately.
  2. Note the source and estimated amount of caffeine consumed.
  3. Keep any packaging.
  4. Do not induce vomiting unless directed by a professional.
