Blue-Green Algae

Critical

Blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria) blooms in lakes, ponds, and slow-moving rivers, especially during hot weather. It produces powerful toxins that can kill a dog within 15-60 minutes of exposure (drinking or swimming).

Signs of Exposure:

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea (sometimes bloody)
  • Tremors and seizures
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Drooling
  • Collapse/Unconsciousness
  • Pale gums

Action Steps:

  1. Prevention is Key: Avoid water that looks green, blue-green, or has scum/foam.
  2. If your dog swims in suspicious water, prevent them from licking their fur.
  3. Wash them thoroughly with fresh water immediately.
  4. Seek EMERGENCY veterinary care immediately if you suspect exposure. There is no antidote, but rapid supportive care can save lives.
CRITICAL - SEEK VET CARE

This is one of the most rapidly fatal toxins in the UK. Do not "wait and see". If your dog has been in blooming water and shows any signs of illness, go to the vet immediately.
