Bloat occurs when a dog's stomach fills with gas and may twist on itself (volvulus). This condition most commonly affects large, deep-chested breeds but can occur in any dog. GDV is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate veterinary intervention.
Risk Factors:
- Deep-chested breeds (Great Danes, German Shepherds, Standard Poodles, etc.)
- Eating or drinking too rapidly
- Exercising shortly after eating
- Stress or anxiety
- Advanced age
- Eating from elevated food bowls (controversial)
Symptoms:
- Distended (swollen) abdomen that may feel tight like a drum
- Unproductive retching or attempts to vomit
- Excessive drooling
- Restlessness, pacing, inability to get comfortable
- Rapid, shallow breathing
- Weakness, collapse
- Pale gums
- Rapid heart rate
Action Steps:
- This is a TRUE EMERGENCY - seek immediate veterinary care.
