Bloat/Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus (GDV)

Critical

Bloat occurs when a dog's stomach fills with gas and may twist on itself (volvulus). This condition most commonly affects large, deep-chested breeds but can occur in any dog. GDV is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate veterinary intervention.

Risk Factors:

  • Deep-chested breeds (Great Danes, German Shepherds, Standard Poodles, etc.)
  • Eating or drinking too rapidly
  • Exercising shortly after eating
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Advanced age
  • Eating from elevated food bowls (controversial)

Symptoms:

  • Distended (swollen) abdomen that may feel tight like a drum
  • Unproductive retching or attempts to vomit
  • Excessive drooling
  • Restlessness, pacing, inability to get comfortable
  • Rapid, shallow breathing
  • Weakness, collapse
  • Pale gums
  • Rapid heart rate

Action Steps:

  1. This is a TRUE EMERGENCY - seek immediate veterinary care.
  2. Call ahead to alert the veterinary clinic you are coming.
  3. Do not attempt home remedies.
  4. Transport your pet carefully and quickly.
CRITICAL - SEEK VET CARE

GDV can cause death within hours if not treated. Mortality rates increase significantly with treatment delays. Even minutes matter with this condition.
