Avocado
Warning
Avocados contain persin, a fungicidal toxin that can cause health problems in some animals, particularly birds and large animals. The pit, skin, and leaves contain the highest concentrations of persin. While dogs and cats are relatively resistant to persin toxicity, the pit poses a serious choking and obstruction hazard, and the high fat content can cause pancreatitis.
Symptoms:
- Vomiting and diarrhoea (uncommon in dogs and cats due to persin, more likely from fat)
- Choking if pit is swallowed
- Intestinal blockage from ingested pit
- Pancreatitis (from high fat content)
Action Steps:
- If your pet has eaten avocado flesh, monitor for digestive upset.
- If your pet has swallowed an avocado pit, contact your veterinarian immediately.
- Watch for signs of intestinal blockage (vomiting, reduced appetite, straining to defecate).
Important Warning
The avocado pit is the most dangerous part for dogs and cats due to choking and obstruction risk. Keep pits away from pets, and discard them where pets cannot access them.
