Alcohol & Yeast Dough

Critical

Alcoholic beverages, foods containing alcohol, and raw yeast dough are dangerous for pets. Alcohol can cause central nervous system depression, respiratory failure, and even death. Yeast dough can expand in the warm environment of the stomach, causing pain and potential rupture. Additionally, as yeast ferments, it produces alcohol.

Symptoms of Alcohol Toxicity:

  • Disorientation and poor coordination
  • Lethargy or excitement
  • Vomiting
  • Decreased respiratory rate
  • Low body temperature
  • Seizures
  • Cardiac arrest in severe cases

Symptoms of Yeast Dough Ingestion:

  • Abdominal distension (bloated appearance)
  • Pain and discomfort
  • Vomiting
  • Signs of alcohol toxicity as fermentation occurs

Action Steps:

  1. Contact your veterinarian immediately.
  2. Do not induce vomiting unless directed by a veterinarian.
  3. For alcohol, note the type and approximate amount consumed.
Important Warning

Pets are much more sensitive to alcohol than humans. Even small amounts of alcoholic beverages, alcohol-containing foods (rum cake, certain extracts), or fermenting dough can be dangerous.
