Abrasions & Road Rash
Warning
Abrasions occur when the skin is scraped away by friction against a rough surface. "Road rash" is a severe form typically caused when an animal is dragged along pavement or rough ground. These wounds can be painful and prone to infection due to ground debris embedded in the wound.
Characteristics:
- Skin surface is scraped or worn away
- May cover a large area
- Often contains dirt, gravel, or other debris
- Usually oozes blood or serum rather than actively bleeding
- Very painful due to exposed nerve endings
- Common on paw pads, elbows, hips, and legs
Action Steps:
- Gently flush the wound with lukewarm water or saline solution.
- Remove visible debris with tweezers if possible (use caution).
- For large or deep abrasions, seek veterinary care.
- For minor abrasions, apply a thin layer of pet-safe antibiotic ointment (if advised by vet).
- Use an E-collar to prevent licking.
- Monitor for signs of infection (increased swelling, redness, warmth, discharge).
- Change bandages daily if used (loose bandaging only, if necessary).
Important Warning
Large abrasions or those containing embedded debris require veterinary attention. These wounds often look worse in the days following injury as damaged tissue becomes more apparent. Extensive abrasions may require pain medication and professional wound care.
